A cross of ‘Pawnee’ x ‘Elliott’ is being used by the University of Georgia Tifton Campus to find DNA markers associated with scab resistance. ‘Pawnee’ is very scab susceptible, and ‘Elliott’ is very resistant. Some of the seedlings from this cross are susceptible to scab (left seedling), while others are resistant (right seedling). Researchers are working to develop DNA markers which can be used to identify resistant seedlings at a young age so that only resistant seedlings are planted into the field.
